How have Filipinos expressed grief alongside the technological means available to them? How does this development align with current Catholic teaching? These were among the questions answered by Asst. Prof. Leo-Martin Angelo R. Ocampo, MA in his recent study entitled 鈥淒igitalizing grief: A Filipino Catholic perspective,鈥 published in the journal Pastoral Psychology.

Studying the Filipino context, which is steeped in religiosity, ritual, and solidarity, Ocampo stated that locally, 鈥済rieving a loved one is usually a very elaborate affair, involving not just the immediate family but the wider community.鈥 Religious practices, according to Ocampo, play 鈥渁n essential role鈥 in providing accompaniment and comfort to the bereaved. The emphasis on the 鈥渉ope in the life to come鈥 is also underscored within the Filipino faith context.

With the advent of technology, Ocampo delved into the remote means of expressing grief as an alternative to in-person and intimate gatherings鈥攜et these may not align with official Church teachings, which 鈥渁ppears to be ambivalent if not outright negative about online religious practices, presenting a potential disconnection with this ongoing development.鈥 The new study provides a reflection alongside data on how religious practices are entering the digital space.

Ocampo is an academic staff of the Institute of Religion and also is an academic researcher of the Research Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics.

A team of UST researchers discovered two tarantula species, Orphnaecus libmanan and Orphnaecus tangcongvaca, in the forest grounds of the Libmanan Caves Natural Park of Camarines Sur, using methods to determine morphology, molecular phylogeny, and ecology.

The team also rediscovered the tarantula species Orphnaecus pellitus, first discovered and described by French naturalist Eug猫ne Simon in 1892. This tarantula species, known to be troglobitic (or an animal that lives entirely in the dark parts of caves), was rediscovered in the Culapnitan Caves, part of the Libmanan Caves Natural Park in Camarines Sur, Bicol.

The rediscovery showed adaptations in the tarantula species, namely, reduced eye size, attenuated limbs, shortened tactile setae, and diminishing pigmentation. According to the study, 鈥渢olerance to hypoxia and heightened sensitivity to ground movements are the other subterranean adaptations observed.鈥 The researchers provide evidence that 鈥O. pellitus is a true troglobitic tarantula reported worldwide and currently the only one known from Asia.

The rediscovery was published in the article in he journal Subterranean Biology, Volume 52. The team of researchers included Darrell C. Acu帽a, Lorenz Rheum P. Ragasa, Prof. Myla R. Santiago-Bautista, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Leonardo A. Gueverra, MSc of the Faculty of Pharmacy鈥檚 Department of Biochemistry. They are also researchers from the Graduate School. Santiago-Bautista and Guevarra are likewise affiliated with the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

The 色鸡导航鈥檚 Faculty of Theology, the Research Center for Theology, Religious Studies and Ethics (RCTRSE), through its Center for Dialogue with Cultures and Religions in Asia (CDCRA),  and the Dominican Province of the Philippines will hold the 13th Leonardo Legaspi, OP Lectures on July 16, 2025, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (Philippine Standard Time).

The event carries the theme, CONVERSATIONS: Catholic Theological Perspectives on Dialogue and Encounter and will feature three presentations that explore the Catholic perspectives on dialogue with other religious traditions and cultures.

The morning session will offer a glimpse of the rich world of ancient biblical commentaries, as it presents the differences and remarkable parallels between the interpretations of Genesis found in early rabbinic Midrashim (specifically Genesis Rabbah) and the influential patristic commentaries of figures like John Chrysostom.

This lecture will not only shed light on their distinct exegetical techniques but also reveal their shared messages of hope and resilience in uncertain times, offering insights relevant to contemporary audiences.

In the afternoon, the discussion will shift to contemporary challenges. It will begin with a presentation on the call of Pope Francis to foster a Culture of Encounter (CoE) that seeks to heal human relationships damaged by a prevailing 鈥渃ulture of indifference.鈥 Pope Francis鈥檚 CoE is presented as a framework for intercultural theology, presented through three interconnected stages: conscientization, conversion, and action, guiding individuals and communities toward deeper mutual understanding and solidarity.

The last lecture will present the essential preliminaries of comparative theology, aiming to lay down the principles of 鈥榗omparison鈥 that pave the way for a more fruitful engagement and theologizing. It will argue that in the Catholic tradition, theological dialogue is not only about engaging with traditions other than ours (ad extra), but is also about dialogue ad intra, where the development of Catholic doctrines is a fruit of the Church鈥檚 engagement with traditions and cultures across her long history. The lecture will argue that, in the Catholic tradition, theologizing has always been dialogical.

Those interested are encouraged to pre-register for the event. You may use either the QR Code provided on the poster or this link:  .
