In a solemn conferment rite on May 1, 2024, UST Rector Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P. PhD received the Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, from the University of Notre Dame Australia in Sydney. The conferment coincided with the UNDA Graduation Ceremony.

UNDA Chancellor Christopher Ellison praised the UST Rector for his steadfast commitment to Catholic higher education, steering the University through the pandemic immediately after taking helm of UST on January 1, 2020 (first as Acting Rector), then on May 7, 2020, formally as Rector.

In a message to the UNDA graduating class, Fr. Ang extended the arm of friendship and collaboration, expressing optimism that the UNDA graduates will soon make changes in their own communities.

The pandemic shifted not just instructional delivery but also University operations to distance and eventually hybrid modality. The former was recognized by the Commission on Higher Education with the prestigious Gawad Edukampyon, which feted UST鈥檚 Excellence in Flexible and Responsive Management.

While steering the University through the pandemic, Fr. Ang continued UST鈥檚 leadership of the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities as Executive Secretary.

Rising above the pandemic, Fr. Ang led the University in inaugurating the General Santos Campus on April 11, 2024 and in opening the UST Manila Annex in Santa Rosa, Laguna, first with the UST-Dr. Tony Tan Caktiong Innovation Center on April 28, 2023.

As he pushes through with his second term, the Rector leads a University that is globally recognized, with more and more programs deemed at par with international counterparts. Research and innovation as well as community service have likewise been intensified, with the aim of contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

A philosopher, Fr. Ang specializes in Chinese philosophy. He teaches courses at the Faculty of Philosophy, where he was Dean while concurrently serving as University Vice-Rector.

The 色鸡导航 inaugurated the Henry Sy Sr. Hall, the latest edifice to stand in the Sampaloc campus, on September 28, 2024. University officials and representatives of Henry Sy Foundation, Inc., SM Foundation, Inc., Anargyroi UST-FMS Foundation, Inc., Starkey Hearing Foundation, Inc., the Research and Endowment Foundation, Inc., attended the solemn rites and formal inauguration.

A space for seeking, learning, and teaching

Through its various simulation rooms, learning spaces, and support facilities, the seven-storey Henry Sy Sr. Hall was built to bolster the formation of future Thomasian doctors’ clinical and research skills. 聽 Adhering to the best ethical standards, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Dean Ma. Lourdes Domingo-Maglinao, MD stated that the simulation laboratories will bring students close to actual practice without compromising patient safety.

Maglinao noted that the edifice heralded an adaptive transformation that added a milestone to the Faculty’s 153-year legacy. “This edifice stands as a testament to the vision, perseverance, and the boundless possibilities that arise when knowledge is fused with empathy and when technology serves the purpose of healing,” Dean Maglinao said.

The edifice is home to Saints Cosmas and Damian Center for Simulation聽and Research. FMS Regent Rev. fr. Angel A. Aparicio O.P. highlighted that the Center will serve as a library of vital knowledge to help batches of Thomasian Doctors. “The Center dedicated to […] the Holy Martyrs Sts. Cosmas and Damian, otherwise called Anargyroi or penniless, is consecrated for the sacred profession of the physician, as we hope it will become a sanctuary of knowledge for future doctors,” fr. Aparicio said. He also shared that it took nine years from its conception to its “birth of baptism.”

The University officials expressed their gratitude to the Sy family, represented by Ms. Deborah Pe-Sy, because the edifice embodied their shared vision to educate batches of future Thomasian Doctors who will also give back and aid the nation for generations to come.

Rector Rev fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD, said that the edifice was borne out of the power of collaboration. “It reminded me of the power of shared vision, collaboration, and commitment. I look forward to seeing the many ways this building will enrich UST, and not just UST, but our Filipino community,” he said.

UST Vice-Grand Chancellor and Prior Provincial of Dominican Province of the Philippines Very Rev. fr. Filemon I. Dela Cruz, Jr., O.P. said the edifice was one of the blessings that came from God’s unending grace.聽The Provincial mentioned that this latest feat also opened an opportunity for the 413-year-old University to revamp its commitment to the mission of providing quality education in the field of science. “Development and technology [may have] brought new challenges, but [it came with] opportunities too. This is a big upgrade for the university. The University hopes to accomplish more and carry on Her mission better. Indeed, God’s grace is unending,” fr. Dela Cruz said.

On behalf of the six Sy-blings, Dr. Lydia Balatbat-Echauz, Executive Director of Henry Sy  Foundation, Inc., recalled the dutiful life of the late businessman who valued the importance of learning despite not having enough education. “His dream was for everyone to get educated. And that is the reason he gave a grant and formed this foundation, where he donated his shares in the company to support all his projects in education,鈥 Echauz said.

The Henry Sy Foundation, Inc., the Anargyroi FMS Foundation, Inc., the Research and Endowment Foundation, Inc., and the Thomasian alumni made the construction and fit-out of the various rooms of this latest edifice possible.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED), through CHED Memorandum Order No. 7, Series of 2024, renewed the AUTONOMOUS STATUS given to UST for a three-year period, from September 16, 2024 to September 15, 2027.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Rector Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD said that UST, with this recognition, 鈥渨e can only be inspired and grateful as well.鈥 The Rector also said that the UST must 鈥渘ot just鈥aintain quality and excellence but to elevate these to a higher level. We owe it to all our stakeholders, most especially our students.鈥 The Rector acknowledged the hard work of the community, who together 鈥渉ave done very well during the period covering 2019 to 2023.鈥 Fr. Ang, who laid out his six-point agenda for the next four years in his installation, expressed hope that the achievement will 鈥渆ncourage everyone to continue contributing to the fulfillment of our mission as a Catholic educational institution.鈥

Meanwhile, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH stressed the importance of quality assurance practices in UST鈥檚 continued pursuit of excellence: 鈥淲e need to focus our efforts on strengthening our quality assurance mechanisms at the institutional, unit, and program levels as we improve our existing programs and develop new and innovative programs and services.鈥 Peralta assured the community of UST鈥檚 continued efforts to 鈥渞ealign our approaches and redesign our academic programs so they effectively respond to the needs of society and prepare our graduates for the future of work.鈥

Autonomous institutions are exempted from CHED鈥檚 regular monitoring and evaluation and are prioritized in the grant of subsidies and other financial incentives or assistance. New programs may also be offered by the given PHEI, which is also authorized to 鈥渄etermine and prescribe their curricular programs to achieve global competence.鈥 Autonomous institutions, meanwhile, are expected to help in quality assurance development and mentoring programs for non-Autonomous and non-Deregulated PHEIs to help increase the number of recognized institutions.

CHED assessed UST and other private higher education institutions using the instrument laid out in CHED Memorandum Order No. 6, Series of 2023. The criteria look into 鈥淐ommitment to Program Excellence鈥 (30 points), 鈥淓xcellence in Instruction, Scholarly Works, and Community Engagements鈥 (40 points), and 鈥淚nstitutional Quality and Excellence鈥 (30 points). Institutions with scores of 80 and above are granted Autonomous Status, which has been conferred to 77 private higher education institutions this cycle.

Among the evidence required of universities are evidence of program accreditation/assessment from international and local agencies, such as ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUNQA) and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and the Centers of Excellence and Development awarded by CHED itself. To date, UST has 18 bachelor鈥檚 programs certified by AUNQA, 13 Centers of Excellence, and 13 Centers of Development. UST programs also enjoy accreditation from local agencies like the Philippine Accrediting Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) and the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU).

Programs with above-national-passing-rate performance in licensure exams, average graduation rate, and percentage of employed graduates were also assessed for the period, along with the presence of academic staff with doctoral degrees and/or industry experience. The engagement of academic staff in research was also assessed through patents, indexed publications, and creative works, along with their recognitions received from local and international agencies. A university鈥檚 partnerships with communities and other institutions were also assessed, including mobility and quality assurance engagements.

Institutional recognitions by both local and institutional bodies, such as AUNQA and ISO, also help in determining the status given to an institution, while recognitions from international rankings bodies like Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS) were also counted. During the period of 2019-2023, UST earned its Institutional Certification from AUNQA, becoming the second Philippine university to enjoy the recognition. Meanwhile, it remains one of the top-ranked universities according to metrics used by THE and QS. UST, which has enjoyed ISO certification, is also transitioning to the ISO 21001:2018 certification soon, following successful certifications under 9001:2008 and 9001:2015.

In an interview with renowned accounting firm PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), UST Rector Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD paid homage to the members of the Thomasian community, including past leaders and stakeholders, as the reason for UST鈥檚 longevity and continued success after 412 years of existence.

In a nine-minute episode of The Centenarian: In the Mind of the CEO, published on PwC鈥檚 website, the Rector said he 鈥渟tands on the shoulders of giants鈥 as the 95th Rector of the University, which has, like before, hurdled enormous challenges like the pandemic. 鈥淢y predecessors, all the persons involved in the University鈥攃ontributed to what UST is now today,鈥 Fr. Ang.

Good synergy and capacity to reinvent

Asked about how the University stays strong and relevant, the Rector bared the University鈥檚 structure, whose various bodies, such as the Council of Regents and the Academic Senate, give rise to open discussions and arrive at a collective decision. 鈥淪uccess in the educational landscape is not the achievement of one person, but it is the work of a community,鈥 the Rector said, talking about how UST stakeholders collectively succeed in overcoming challenges. This was made apparent in the ability of the University to transition over 45,000 stakeholders to the enriched virtual mode of instruction, UST鈥檚 answer to the mobility restrictions during the pandemic. Such efforts did not go unnoticed, as this was hailed with the 2021 Gawad Edukampyon for Excellence in Flexible and Responsive Management by the Commission on Higher Education.

The Rector bared that these initiatives are coupled with stringent quality assurance mechanisms guided by the international standards of the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance, which has since granted UST its Institutional Certification. UST is only the 8th university in ASEAN and the 2nd in the Philippines to receive AUN-QA鈥檚 university-wide stamp of approval.

Reinventing oneself is also hinged on careful strategic planning and engagement in research, which 鈥渨ill propel UST into the 21st century.鈥 Curricular offerings in the University are subjected to regular review especially by industry practitioners, who partner with the University through partnerships forged mainly by the alumni networks.

Facing the country鈥檚 education crisis

The Rector highlighted the importance of having enough resources and competent educators to serve as the panacea to the ongoing crisis in education. As a private institution, UST aims to help by also making education 鈥渆quitable.鈥 One group of beneficiaries of the University鈥檚 scholarship programs is the teacher education students of the College of Education: 鈥淲e need teachers for the future. We need to help them.鈥

Responding to the question on UST鈥檚 initiatives against disinformation, the Rector highlighted the role of values formation and how several units in the University, such as the Communications Bureau, are tasked with disseminating accurate and verified information to help stakeholders sift through fact and fiction.

Finally, the Rector also shared how the Simbahayan Community Development Office is UST鈥檚 flagship for extension services. Through capacitating not just individuals but whole communities, people become able to stand on their own and not just depend on what is initially given.

The Rector鈥檚 feature, the 8th in The Centenarian series, is the first for an educational institution. Past episodes featured the Chief Executive Officers of Philippine stalwarts companies such as the Ayala Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, Meralco, and the Bank of the Philippine Islands.

In a virtual Eucharistic Celebration to mark the start of their Thomasian journey, close to 11,000 freshmen of the 色鸡导航 were challenged by the University Rector, Very Rev. fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD, to make the most of the opportunities they will have and discover their identity while in UST.

鈥淏e a first-rate version of yourself: your intelligence, emotions, talents, character are God’s precious gifts. Develop them,鈥 said the Rector in his homily. The head of the University expressed joy at having the new batch of Thomasians, for their 鈥減resence gives fresh energy. We need young blood.鈥

Talking about University life, the Rector recalled the Latin word 鈥淯niversitas,鈥 which means 鈥渁ll together.鈥 鈥淲e are a whole community of teachers and scholars all together. Entering a University is a life-changing event that is difficult at the start,鈥 the Rector said.

The importance of learning and foresight

Education, according to fr. Ang, must not be taken for granted, especially at a time when access to it is challenged by the economic difficulties caused by the pandemic: 鈥淓ducation helps you get ahead in life. Seize this opportunity. Take advantage of it, for not everyone has a fair share of chances. You are most privileged to be given a chance to continue your education. The greatest calamity is the tragedy of missed opportunities. Don’t miss your opportunities.鈥

To guide the learners in their pursuit, the Rector asked them to reflect on what they actually envision themselves to be. 鈥淲hat you want in life and where you want to go? How do you want to be known? No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid. I want you to chase your dreams and catch them. I hope that the choice of your course or strand. The secret of success is loving what one does,鈥 fr. Ang said.

By living the University experience, the students, according to fr. Ang, will be led to discover more about themselves: 鈥淚 give you a freehand to discover slowly what people say about Thomasians. There is nothing ordinary about Thomasians. In order for you to figure it out for yourself, you have to experience living it. Off you go, happy strolling. Welcome to the Pontifical and Royal 色鸡导航!鈥
