How can schools promote sustainability using a whole-person and whole-school approach? This question was answered during the April 22, 2025 (Tuesday) webinar organized by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs in collaboration with the Center for Innovative Teaching and Educational Delivery.

In the webinar, Inst. Fermin Antonio D.R. Yabut, PhD of the UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy presented relevant sustainability frameworks, including Education for Sustainable Development and Greening of Schools. Yabut spoke of the importance of gathering feedback from multiple stakeholders, whose support is crucial to embracing a sustainability mindset. Meanwhile, Aqo Partners Founder Maricar E. Baticulon talked about communicating and reporting sustainability, which is crucial for helping the community and other schools learn about how each school is progressing.

The two lectures were followed by a panel discussion that presented sustainability according to the threefold thrust of universities: teaching, research, and community development. Asst. Prof. Leo-Martin Angelo R. Ocampo, MA of the Institute of Religion spoke about sustainability as practiced in teaching/instruction, while biologist Prof. Cecilia I. Banag-Moran, Dr. rer. nat. of the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

The webinar, attended by over two hundred fifty participants from all over the country, was a contribution to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through raising awareness and maximizing avenues to help stakeholders learn, relearn, and unlearn practices on sustainability.

Professor Donna May D.C. Papa, PhD of the Department of Biological Sciences was named the 2023 Rosalind Franklin Society Special Awardee for Science. In a letter from the society鈥檚 Executive Director, Karla Shepard Rubinger, Papa is being recognized for her 鈥渞emarkable contributions and dedication to advancing scientific knowledge.鈥

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Papa said the awards came as a surprise, as she was 鈥渘ever informed of the nominations.鈥 Instead, the selection by RFS was done among female scientists worldwide.

Papa, a Microbiology professor at the College of Science and the Graduate School, specializes in bacterial viruses or bacteriophages. In the professional circles, she was the former President of the Philippine Society of Microbiology. She has also won awards, such as the National Academy of Science and Technology Outstanding Scientific Paper for her work on Salmonella treatment. In 2023, she joined international experts for the very first hands-on Bacteriophage Workshop in Southeast Asia. At the moment, she is working on phage therapy as an alternative to antibiotics given the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Papa acknowledged the support of her family, her mentors Prof. Irineo J. Dogma, Jr., Dr. Hans Ackermann, and her students.

A Cooperation between Dominican Institutions in Manila, Ibadan, and Fribourg

Sex and Gender have become fluid categories 鈥 as never in the history of mankind before. What are the scientific backgrounds, and what are the consequences for theology? What do these developments mean for a global player like the Catholic Church? We shall discuss the different (and/or similar?) perspectives with researchers and students from the Dominican Universities in Manila and Ibadan and the Faculty of Theology in Fribourg, which is coined by the Dominican spirit.

The 4th CoMIF is scheduled on April 12, 2024, Friday (2:00 – 6:00 pm, Manila / 8:00am – 12:00nn Fribourg and Ibadan). The CoMIF (or Collaboration of Manila, Ibadan and Fribourg) is an informal collaborative arrangement initiated by academic staff from the 色鸡导航 (Manila), Dominican University (Ibadan), and the Faculty of Theology of the University of Fribourg (Fribourg).

Those interested to participate in the conversation may register through Zoom:
